Outdoor Recreation and RV Industry Champion, Secretary Ryan Zinke to Speak at RVIA Committee Week

U.S. Department of Interior Secretary, Ryan Zinke will address RVIA members as the Tuesday luncheon keynote speaker during Committee Week, taking place in Washington, D.C. June 4-8. The U.S. Department of the Interior has enormous influence on the outdoor recreation economy and RV industry through management of our nation’s iconic public lands. Secretary Zinke, a lifelong outdoorsman and long-time friend of the RV industry, owns a 38’ Newmar Class A motorhome and enjoys the RV lifestyle. As an outdoor enthusiast, hunter and angler, Secretary Zinke understands the importance of access to and funding for America’s public lands and waters and the outdoor industry’s critical $887 billion economic impact.

Several outdoor recreation associations and companies have expressed enthusiasm for the direction that Secretary Zinke is charting within the agency. RVIA and the Outdoor Recreation Industry Roundtable (ORIR) recently met with Secretary Zinke after an encouraging day of discussions with Trump Administration officials, which included participation by the Interior Department’s Senior White House Liaison, Special Assistant to the Secretary for Fish and Wildlife and Parks, Acting National Park Service (NPS) Director, NPS Associate Director of Business Services and Forest Service Deputy Chief.

The Secretary is eager to collaborate with the outdoor recreation community to remove barriers and streamline antiquated processes that hinder growth of the outdoor recreation economy with an emphasis on prioritizing a positive visitor experience. He is focused on expanding outdoor recreation access and providing high-quality experiences on our public lands for the current and next generation recreationalist.

“RVIA is committed to working in partnership with Secretary Zinke and his team to continue to grow the outdoor recreation economy, expand recreational access at federally managed lands, address infrastructure and backlogged maintenance needs, and partner to modernize and expand federal campgrounds for current and next-generation RVers to enjoy,” said RVIA President, Frank Hugelmeyer.

RVIA applauds Secretary Zinke for being an outdoor recreation champion. As the Congressman from Montana he co-sponsored the Outdoor Recreation Jobs and Economic Impact (REC) Act of 2016. This new law ensures that outdoor recreation spending and jobs are measured by the federal government as a distinct component of the U.S. economy for the first time ever.

Secretary Zinke will speak on Tuesday between 12:00 – 1:30 pm. Interested members may still sign up to participate in Committee Week and Advocacy Day to shape the future of the Association and to be an integral part of setting the national agenda for the next four years.
