49 New Scenic Byways And All-American Roads Announced
This week, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) announced 49 new designations to the America's Byways collection, including 15 All-American Roads and 34 National Scenic Byways in 28 states. This increases the number of America's Byways to 184 in 48 states.
“We’re proud to have supported legislation that led to the announcement of 49 new Scenic Byways and All-American Roads, the first additions since 2009,” said RV Industry Association Senior Manager of Government Affairs Samantha Rocci. “RVing is about many things—freedom, flexibility, exploration— but it all comes back to the majesty of the open road. The revitalization of this program ensures that millions of RVers will continue to be able to experience the magic of roads like Historic Route 66, Skyline Drive, and the Blue Ridge Parkway for years to come.”
“The designation of these new All-American Roads and National Scenic Byways is a victory for organizations that share Scenic America’s commitment to preserving and protecting our nation’s most beautiful roadways and fueling economic development through tourism,” said Scenic America President Mark Falzone. “We are grateful to the RV Industry Association for their leadership and partnership in this effort which was instrumental in making today’s historic announcement possible.”
Thanks to action taken by Scenic America and the RV industry, the Reviving America’s Scenic Byways Act of 2019 was signed into law in September of 2019. Congress had stopped funding the program in 2012, but the new law required the Secretary of Transportation to start the application process for new byways within 90 days and to designate a round of new National Scenic Byways within one year. This week’s announcement is a result of that process.
"Through their many unique qualities, each of these new additions to the National Scenic Byways program helps America’s roads tell our national story," said FHWA Executive Director Tom Everett. "These special routes offer travelers exciting new opportunities to explore the nation, from coast to coast or close to home."
Created in 1991, the program is a collaborative effort to help recognize, preserve, and enhance selected roads throughout the United States. The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) recognizes certain roads based on one or more archeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational, and scenic qualities.
“Scenic roads have always been popular with travelers, and support a wide array of area businesses too,” Everett added. “Whether hotels, eateries, or gas stations, Scenic Byways and All-American Roads support the nation’s small business community and are economic drivers for entire regions.”
