Florida Provides Tax Holiday On Outdoor Gear And Recreational Activities
In recognition of the importance of outdoor recreation, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has signed the legislative package “Freedom Week,” which provides a tax holiday on outdoor gear and recreational activities. The holiday lasts from July 1-7, 2021 and provides a tax exemption on sports events, live music, state park admissions, gym dues, and movie theatre tickets for all events held that week. Items used for outdoor recreation such as tents, sleeping bags, sunscreen, grills, recreational water supplies, and fishing supplies will also not be taxed.
“My favorite [part of the package] is no tax on retail sale of specified boating and water activities supplies, camping supplies, fishing supplies, general outdoor activities, and sports equipment,” DeSantis stated during the announcement.
Freedom Week is intended to encourage people to explore the outdoors as COVID-19 restrictions ease. “We’re proud of being a free state, we’re proud of being open, and we want taxpayers to be able to benefit if they’re participating in all these things,” DeSantis said.
The package, which comes at a time of economic recovery in Florida, will result in $196.3 million in relief for Florida. It was introduced by House Speaker Chris Sprowls and Ways and Means Committee Chair Bobby Payne.
There are also two other renewed tax holidays included in the bill: one for disaster preparedness, which runs from May 28-June 6, and one for the back-to-school season, which lasts from July 31 to August 9. When combined, the three holidays create $134.6 million in relief for Florida.
