Governor Holcomb Opens Campgrounds In Time For Memorial Day Weekend

Today, Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb announced that campgrounds in Indiana will be allowed to open this Friday as the state moves into Stage 3 of the its reopening plan. Under Holcomb’s previous executive order, campgrounds were not scheduled to open until May 24 - the Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend.

The RV Industry Association, our members, and partners across the industry, have been working closely with the governor’s office to have the date moved up, to stop many of the small Indiana businesses that own and operate RV parks and campgrounds from being put at a significant disadvantage by not being able to open for the full holiday weekend.

“Our state is proud of the fact that we are responsible for 83 percent of the total American production of RVs,” Holcomb said during today’s press conference. “So, this is of particular interest to not just that sector but to the folks that like to get out on their own and see our great state. Campgrounds will be open come Friday morning.”

The RV Industry Association, the RV Indiana Council, our members, and the entire RV industry in Indiana applaud the governor’s decision and look forward to Hoosiers getting out in their RVs this Memorial Day Weekend while following all CDC, state, and health guidelines.

The new executive order will be signed tomorrow, May 21 and go into effect Friday, May 22. The counties hardest hit by the coronavirus, Lake, Marion and Cass, will be eligible to enter Stage 3 on June 1, at which point campgrounds in those counties will be able to reopen.

In addition to campgrounds opening in Indiana, Stage 3 will also allow:

• Social gatherings up to 100 people
• Restaurants to continue to operate at 50 percent capacity (same as Stage 2)
• Movie theaters to open at 50 percent capacity
• Gyms and fitness studios to open with some restrictions
• Raceways to begin competition with no spectators
• State park inns to reopen
