I Should Get Out More

Oct 5, 2018

In celebration of National Poetry Day, The RV Industry Association has decided to participate with a poem of our own! This year’s theme is centered around travel, nature and the RV lifestyle. We hope these words inspire you.

I Should Get Out More

Stretches of open road

Duffle bags full of unfolded clothes

Only new places to go

Places where wishes are fulfilled

And dreams are fueled with diesel

Hope’s a major thing on a motorhome

To boldly go where you feel most alive

Driving by starry skies

Cruising the course

Connecting constellations like cursive

On our way to another campground

Cross-country

Across state lines

The thought of “work” never crossed my mind

One hand on the wheel

The other pushed the window down

And let the wind wash my face of fatigue

I was told that you haven’t travelled

Until you’ve been taught how to pitch a tent

Is that true?

We brought our pasts with us

And unpacked them at parks that are peaceful

And playful

And left with priceless memories for the future

What’s next?

Maybe find that deck of bicycle cards

I’m taking all bets

I see your granola bar

And raise you this bag of trail mix

We found ourselves

Trekking through trails

Treading lightly

On the rich undergrowth beneath the trees

Trying not to crack a twig

I knew nature by her first name

I was whole when I was with the world

As much as we want to map out our lives

There’s something enchanting about embracing the unexpected

Because life is too short

For it not to be marked by fun and fortuitous moments

Just remember to enjoy the journey
