Lippert Introduces Industry-First, 100% Biodegradable Mattress Solution
Lippert, the owner of Somnum brand mattresses, is excited to announce an industry-first sleeping solution with its next generation, 100% recyclable, ecofriendly EnviroSpring mattress. The innovative bedding technology features an exceptional sleep design and benefits while providing a zero-waste solution for colleges and universities, boarding schools, and other organizations with residential facilities that are focused on advancing their green initiatives.
Environmental experts say mattress disposal remains a serious environmental issue as close to 20 million mattresses are disposed of in landfills each year, occupying as much as 800 million cubic feet. Recycling old mattress designs can also be expensive, costing between $10 to $25 to recycle a single mattress, depending on the recycling center’s capacities and capabilities. Some recycling centers are not able to handle the high quantities of mattresses that residential campuses need to get rid of each year, but the newest EnviroSpring mattress eliminates much of those cost and volume concerns while providing a more positive environmental impact.
“Many colleges and universities are struggling to find recycling options for their mattresses, so they’re seeking an environmentally friendly solution. The EnviroSpring biodegradable core is better than being recyclable, it’s landfill friendly,” said Mike Padrnos, Somnum Development Manager.
“We are excited to partner with Lippert to place their EnviroSpring mattresses at Texas A&M! The product itself is high quality, comfortable, sustainably manufactured, and provides our students with an opportunity to learn more about closed-loop products. The team at Lippert has been exceptional in providing timely and thorough customer service, and we would recommend them to any campus that is interested in converting their mattress stock to a superior product,” stated Brandon Carlson, Residence Hall Coordinator at Texas A&M University.
EnviroSpring’s fully biodegradable core can go directly to the landfill where it will naturally decompose within two years. The anaerobic (oxygen free) soils afforded in landfills promote an accelerated biodegradation of the special foam core. Independent laboratory tests show that up to 40% of biodegradation was achieved within the first 120 days with microbe-rich conditions, with the remainder of the core decomposing within a few years. This means that the initial space taken up by the core becomes available to be filled with other trash and even other college mattresses that will not decompose for many decades or centuries.
This exclusive EnviroSpring core passes ASTM D-5511 standards for biodegradability. Additional EnviroSpring features include:
