Recap Of EPA Webinar On Heavy Duty Engines
Earlier this month, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) conducted a webinar to provide information about upcoming changes to the certification modules for Heavy Duty (HD) Engines, Tractors and Vocational Vehicles within the Engines and Vehicles – Compliance Information System (EV-CIS).
During the webinar, EPA staff provided a 12-page presentation discussing how the HD engine and HD vehicle greenhouse gas (GHG) certification modules of EV-CIS are being revised to accommodate Phase 2 while continuing to support Phase 1 of EPA’s GHG emissions and fuel efficiency standards. The revisions shared are necessary for many reasons: starting with the 2021 model year, there will exist new regulatory sub-categories for SI (spark-ignition), CI (compression-ignition) and custom chassis vocational vehicles—which includes motorhomes. There are also new optional design (non-GEM) standards for select custom chassis vocational vehicles, also applicable to motorhomes.
As discussed during the webinar, EPA is targeting fall 2019 for a production deployment of both the HD vehicle and HD engine certification modules. They hope that all manufacturers will participate in testing—the timing of which is still being determined. Additional webinars are planned to kickoff testing activities.
Draft versions of the data requirements and business rules for HD vehicles with proposed changes for Phase 2 are available online here. Draft versions of the HD engine documentation with proposed changes for Phase 2 will be available at a later date. For additional information, click here.
