RV Owner Demographics: An Overview Of The Casual Camper
The Go RVing RV Owner Demographic Profile is the most comprehensive study of RV ownership ever conducted, providing deep insights and perspectives on the demographics and ownership habits of RV Owners, Former RV Owners, and RV Intenders. The study identified seven distinct clusters based on RV owners’ unique motivations, needs, and habits.
One of the clusters, the “Casual Campers,” comprise 39% of total RVers. Only using their RV for a few weekends a year in the warmer months, Casual Campers have thoroughly enjoyed the RV lifestyle and its provision of relaxation and an escape in nature for years. While a large and satisfied group in total, their low usage and interest in other travel options makes them least committed to the lifestyle.
The average age range of casual campers tends to be older: 82% are over age 55. 90% live with no children at home, and 55% are retired. The types of RVs most common to casual campers are the conventional travel trailer, the fifth-wheel travel trailer, and the folding camping trailer. 55% purchased their RV new, and 51% plan to purchase another RV.
When asked their top reasons for RVing, casual campers overwhelmingly indicated outdoor relaxation, exploring the great outdoors, and visiting a location with natural beauty. While out and about, many in this cluster enjoy camping and fishing. They gravitate towards state parks, private campgrounds, and national parks. 89% hit the road in the summer, and 73% in the fall.
There are five remaining clusters that we will be exploring in the coming weeks. Check out our overview of the Family Campers here, or an overview of the clusters here.
